Math and Physical Sciences Learning Community

Program Overview:

The Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MAPS) Learning Community creates a community for students to explore and learn about exciting advances in scientific areas including astronomy, chemistry, geological sciences, mathematics, physics and statistics.

The learning community provides students living in the same residence hall floor with the opportunity to interact with faculty, staff and other students who share the same curiosity and interests.

Opportunities to study together, visit physics and chemistry labs, take field trips, watch movies and enjoy dinner with a professor are just a few of the activities available to students in the MPS learning community. For example, you may learn how lasers work, discover how computers generate maps of the earth’s surface or visit Perkins Observatory to gaze at stars and planets. Your participation in this program will enhance your academic experience, provide opportunities to make new friends, and show you how to get involved in the fields within the mathematical and physical sciences.

Benefits of this program include:

Students participating in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Learning Community will have the opportunity to live together in Steeb Hall and participate in high-quality programs and activities to enhance their understanding of mathematical and physical sciences. For example, students may take advantage of the following activities:

  • Interacting with faculty outside the classroom
  • Participating in study group sessions with tutors
  • Enjoying social activities
  • Visiting cutting-edge science laboratories
