Franz Theodore Stone Laboratory is the nation’s oldest freshwater biological field station and the Island Campus of The Ohio State University. Located on Lake Erie’s Gibraltar Island, the Lab provides summer college courses, science workshops, and a year-round research facility.
"Visiting Stone Lab on Gibralter Island was a chance to escape. The natural beauty of the island and the sound of the waves created the perfect setting for our staff retreat. As a group we were able to get away from the stress of the everyday demands of work and focus on preparing for the upcoming school year." —Ryan R. Poirier, University Housing Coordinator
"My summer at Stone Lab was amazing! I attended field-based classes that provided me with great experiences to list on my resume. Also, the friendships and connections I made have stayed strong both professionally and socially. Hopefully, I’ll be able to go back!" - Katie LaFay, Resident Advisor
"One of the best things about the trip we took to Stone Lab was having an entire island to ourselves for the night! Our trip focused on the contributions of Mr. Stone and Commodore Perry to both Ohio State and to Ohio—how people’s leadership not only effects change during the time of their service, but also how it influences us years later. We had a real blast on that overnight trip!" - Kathryn French, Former Resident Manager
