Overview of the Housing Community

Campus housing is home to first-year and upperclass students. All unmarried full-time students within two years of high school graduation must live on campus, unless exempted, space is no longer available, or they are living with family.

In addition to our regular housing arrangements, our living-learning communities provide special opportunities for students to share personal interests, lifestyles, and academic goals.

A NOTE ON ACCOMMODATION REQUESTS:

Students requesting modifications to their housing as an accommodation for a disability should contact Student Life Disability Services.

  • Approved housing accommodations will be communicated to Housing and Residence Education for assignment consideration.
  • Housing stock is limited, the process will focus on your disability related needs first and your preferences second; you are encouraged to engage with Student Life Disability Services early. The request process often takes several weeks, so we encourage you to connect with SLDS at least four (4) weeks in advance of your priority deadline. Students may continue to submit requests after the priority deadlines, but accommodations supported after the deadline would be implemented based on available inventory at the time of approval.

Staff Assistance in the Halls

Housing and Residence Education has many staff members who can ease your transition to Ohio State, point you in the right direction, and help you answer tough questions. Our staff includes resident advisors, staff assistants, hall directors, and office assistants.

Resident Advisors (RA) and Community Advisors (CA)

These are upperclass or graduate students who are there to help other students find their way at Ohio State. There are several staff members in every residence hall-most halls have one on every floor. They will facilitate fun and educational activities for you to do with other people on your floor, inform you about university norms and expectations, and serve as a resource for you if you aren't sure where to go with a particular question.

Hall Directors

Hall directors are full-time professional staff members who have master's degrees in higher education. They are experts on collegiate life and can help you resolve concerns, no matter how common or unique. Hall directors work at an office near or behind the front desk of your residence hall, and they live either in your building or very close by. They supervise student staff members in the residence hall and serve as an information source on all kinds of academic and extracurricular opportunities.

Office Assistants

Office assistants are students who work at the front desks of residence halls. They are there to serve as a resource and provide support for students living on campus. They put mail in boxes, check out vacuum cleaners and sports equipment, provide phone numbers, and generally assist students who stop by the front desk.

Leadership and Employment Opportunities

Housing and Residence Education is one of the largest employers of undergraduate students on campus. Diverse employment opportunities include administrative support, academic and personal advising, and residence hall monitoring and supervision. Students are able to arrange their work schedules around classes and find many advantages in working where they live. In addition, leadership positions are available as resident advisors and hall government officers. These students work with and/or represent their peers and gain valuable communication, conflict management and leadership experience.

Activities and the Conveniences of Home

Study rooms, pianos and TV rooms are just some of the amenities available to you in some of the residence halls.  In addition, fitness and recreation facilities are conveniently located on campus.  Our staff, and organized student social groups (of which you may be a part) host frequent activities for you to participate in, such as dinners with faculty, spring break alternatives and more.

Every room or suite (except in the Alumnae Scholarship Houses, Mendoza House apartments, and the Worthington/Neil Buildings) is furnished with a combination refrigerator/microwave oven. Residence halls are also equipped with washers and dryers.

ResNet

ResNet is a high-speed connection from your personal computer to Ohio State’s network and the Internet. Students in the residence halls have two options to connect—wireless and wired—and can do so at no additional cost. All residence hall rooms are wired with one port per resident; study rooms and temporary housing are also wired. In addition, all residence hall public areas, study rooms, and student rooms have access to the wireless network.  For help and additional information, visit ResNet.
