The Students Understanding Sustainability and Taking Action to Improve Nature and Society (SUSTAINS) Learning Community focuses on helping students explore and engage with sustainability topics and human interaction with environmental issues. Through discussion, service and hands-on learning, students who are members of this community will learn about best practices for sustainable living and have opportunities to explore how sustainability relates to their life and the lives of others. Students of any major who are interested in becoming leaders in sustainability, personally, and professionally, by fostering connections with others and learning how sustainable actions impact society.
Living-Learning Community Highlights
Arrival programming to build relationships with fellow SUSTAINS members, connect with SUSTAINS staff and participate in a service project.
Seminar-long course taught in the fall semester by Sustainability Institute staff.
Develop and implement a sustainability project on-campus with support from Ohio State faculty and staff.
Dinner and dialogue series with professionals working in the sustainability for corporations, nonprofit organizations and in Central Ohio communities.
Annual professional development trip which includes meeting with sustainability professionals involved in urban sustainable development, renewable energy, federal and/or state agency work, sustainable food systems, nonprofit management or corporate sustainablility.
Opportunities to be involved with sustainability initiatives on campus, as well as service opportunities in the community.
LLC Application and Housing Due Dates for Incoming First-Year Students
A submitted Living-Learning Community Application is due by April 15, 2026 . No late applications will be accepted. You do not have to wait until you are accepted to Ohio State and/or receive your housing contract to apply.
Students will receive an update on their application status by April 30, 2026 .
Please make sure your contract and space reservation fee are received no later than May 15, 2026 in order to ensure your eligibility to participate in a Living-Learning Community. Housing Contracts are sent to your Ohio State email account based upon your paid acceptance to the University beginning in March.
Please note that all students in Living-Learning Communities are required to reside in a space within the Living-Learning Community and live with other Living-Learning Community participants. Living-Learning Community students may only request a roommate accepted into the same LLC.
LLC Application and Housing Due Dates for Current OSU Students
Current Ohio State students who will be be in their second year during the 2025-2026 school year and are interested in joining or returning to a living-learning community should complete the Living-Learning Community Application no later than February 15, 2026 .
Completing this application does not guarantee housing in an Ohio State Residence Hall or a specific room type. You must submit your reselection form by the Housing and Residence Education deadline in order to participate. Your housing reselection information will arrive at your OSU e-mail account at a later date.
Students will receive an update on their LLC application status by the end of February .
Change of campus students must also contact Housing Assignments no later than February 1, 2026 at 614-292-8266 or housing@osu.edu to ensure they are included in the housing reselection process and eligible for Living-Learning Community participation.
