Fall 2023 Residence Hall Closing Information

November 13, 2023

The residence halls will close at 2 p.m. on December 15.  After Thanksgiving, students will receive emails regarding the move out procedures and how to sign up for a move out time slot.  Students should leave within 24 hours of their last final.

Students will not be permitted to stay in residence hall that close for wintr break, inclusive of: Archer House, Baker Hall East, Baker Hall West, Barrett House, Blackburn House, Busch House, Canfield Hall, Fechko House, German House, Halloran House, Hanley House, Haverfield House, Lincoln House, Mack Hall, Nosker House, Pennsylvania Place, Pomerene House, Scholars House East, Scholars House West, Smith-Steeb Hall, and Torres House.

If you are in need of housing over the winter break period (December 15 - January 7), we do have a very limited number of spaces available in temporary 4 person rooms in some of the academic year residence halls on south campus.  The cost to stay in these spaces is $35 per day.  To make arrangements, please contact Housing and Residence Education at (614) 292-8266 once emails are sent out after Thanksgiving. Due to limited availability, spaces will be secured only for students who are needing to make arrangements for the entire break period.  Fees for break housing will be added to your Spring Semester 2024 university account.  Please be sure to make your break housing arrangements no later than December 8.  After this time, or once all spaces have been committed, making break housing arrangements will no longer be possible.

Academic Year residence halls that will remain open for winter break (students still will need to sign up and indicate they plan to stay for the break in order to have access) include: Bowen House, Bradley Hall, Drackett Tower, Gateway, Houck House, Houston House, Jones Tower, Lawrence Tower, Mendoza House, Morrill Tower, Morrison Tower, Neil Building, Norton House, Park-Stradley Hall, Paterson Hall, Raney House, Scott House, Siebert Hall, Taylor Tower, The Residence on 10th, and Worthington Building.  ATI/Wooster, Mansfield, and Newark housing will also remain open for break.

Students living in an academic year building have the opportunity to remain in your assigned room space, and/or come and go throughout the entire winter break period.  However, please note that ALL ACCESS to ALL residence halls will be shut off during break, effective at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2023. In order to maintain the utmost security for our residents, we are requiring all students who wish to stay at any time in their residence hall during break (December 15 - January 7), declare their intentions officially with Housing and Residence Education.  Please access https://housingportal.osu.edu/myhousing to make arrangements if you are planning to stay in your residence hall room at ANY time between December 15, 2023 and January 7, 2024.

  • Schedule your departure day and time between Thursday, December 1 - Friday, December 15, 2023. This will limit the number of people on campus at any one time while allowing you to collect your belongings. Please access the StarRez Check-Out Scheduler: https://housingportal.osu.edu/myhousing (available when emails are sent out after Thanksgiving)
  • It is important to adhere to your chosen schedule and have a family member remain with the vehicle while loading. We also ask that your move out be completed within 30 minutes of your scheduled time in order to accommodate your fellow Buckeyes.
  • You will be permitted to leave items in your room during winter break, however, you are strongly encouraged to take your valuable items with you.
  • You will need to check-out at the front desk or with a Resident Advisor or Community Advisor prior to leaving for winter break.

Before you leave for Winter break, you should take a few quick moments to prepare your rooms to be left clean and in good condition (especially as vacancies will be filled by new students for spring semester): please refer to the checklist to the right Fall 2023 Closing Checklist.
