I was assigned to live in Taylor Tower this spring, so what are my options? Taylor Tower residents have been given the option of either relocating to other available spaces within Ohio State’s housing inventory, or they can cancel their spring semester housing contract for a full refund. Check your email for instructions on how to report your decision.
I am moving to another room in university housing. What options do I have for having my items moved? Housing will provide carts, boxes and other packing supplies, and then they will work with you to schedule a move to your new room. You will be responsible for packing your items, but they will be moved for you.
I am planning to move to an off-campus location. Where can I get help locating housing options? Off-Campus and Commuter Student Engagement can assist you in connecting with local property owners who have open inventory or to take over someone else's lease. You can visit their website, including a list of housing resources they offer, or visit them in their office on the third floor of the Ohio Union during their regular business hours.
What happened in Taylor Tower? At about 9:50 p.m. the evening of Friday, January 9, a leak was reported on the 12th floor of Taylor Tower. After an assessment by a maintenance technician and supervisor, it was determined that it did not warrant an emergency response. Early on the morning of January 10, 2026, Taylor Tower experienced a significant pipe failure, leading to major flooding on multiple floors. Immediate response and mitigation efforts were initiated. All Taylor Tower residents were contacted through multiple communication channels, and their emergency contacts and family members on file received an email update of the situation. After assessing the damage throughout the day, it became clear that, given the extent of the damage and the length of time it will take to make the necessary repairs, particularly to the plumbing system and elevator operations, Taylor Tower will not be a viable housing facility for spring semester 2026.
I want to move off-campus. What should I do? You may still cancel your housing contract. In addition to receiving a full refund of your housing and dining fees for spring semester, the $400 and $75 Buck-ID cash already offered, we are also offering an additional one-time $1,000 payment for relocation expenses.
- This offer is in place to assist you while we expedite our relocation process for all Taylor Tower residents and also because we understand that the locations, room types and roommate configurations we can offer may differ from your preferences.
- If you would like to take advantage of this offer, please email us at hre@osu.edu with a subject line of “Taylor Tower Relocation Offer.”
- These payments would be credited to your account in the near future.
Where am I going to live short-term until things are settled?
- If you have any ability to commute from home or stay with friends or family off-campus, we urge you to do so. In addition to the $400 credit and $75 on your BuckID, students will also be credited for nights they do not stay in university housing.
- We have secured hotel beds through Friday of this week to help accommodate student needs for the next several days. Keep an eye your email for hotel assignments, which we are planning to share as soon as possible.

Students who are currently staying in university-facilitated temporary accommodations will be able to utilize their Lyft vouchers for the duration of their stay. Access has been expanded to all locations on the Columbus campus. CABS shuttle service for those locations will end at 10 p.m. Friday, Jan 16. In addition to the Lyft vouchers, students who need transportation to or from campus between the hours of 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. are encouraged to use CABS On Demand, https://ttm.osu.edu/on-demand.
What is involved in moving to another university housing location? We have begun making relocation assignments and encourage you to closely monitor your BuckeyeMail email account for important updates and information about your new assignment. It is important to note the following:
- Please respond to email offers of a new room assignment as quickly as possible and be aware of the response deadline listed in your communication.
- IMPORTANT: It is unlikely that we will be able to assign you to the exact same room type or area of campus, or to maintain current roommate configurations; we are sorry for the frustration this may cause. The majority of our available spaces are located in Morrill and Lincoln Towers and residence halls on South Campus.
- NOTE: If you choose not to select the room offered to you, you may still select the option of cancelling your housing contract (as detailed above).
- Once you have confirmed acceptance of your relocation assignment, our Facilities team will be in touch to assist with scheduling your move. These updates will be sent via email.
- Student Life will assist with the move process by providing carts, boxes and other needs, as well as physically moving your items for you.
- If you have not indicated your preference to either stay on campus or move off-campus, Housing and Residence Education will attempt to reach you by phone, or you may email hre@osu.edu to indicate your intentions
Will you help me move to a new location?
- Whether you are moving on campus or off, our Facilities team will help to coordinate your Move-Out process. This will allow access to the building and loading areas to be facilitated.
- This coordination will be organized over email, so watch your email to coordinate a time to move your items from Taylor Tower to your new housing location.
- There are large tote bags (donated by IKEA) and boxes available in the Taylor Tower lobby to help residents with their move.
How can I find someplace to live off-campus?
- You can reach out to Off-Campus and Commuter Student Engagement (OCCSE) for support as you secure off campus housing.
- Off-Campus and Commuter Student Engagement can assist you in connecting with in-network property companies who have open inventory or help you find available subleases. You can visit their website, schedule an off-campus housing consultation, watch a pre-recorded off-campus living session or visit them on the third floor of the Ohio Union during their regular business hours.
How is Ohio State supporting students through this disruption?
- Our goal is to do all we can to limit disruptions to your spring semester, though we also acknowledge that with classes already underway there will be impacts.
- You are encouraged to connect directly with your instructors regarding impacts. The Student Advocacy Center will send to you a memo that can be shared with instructors or other offices to explain these unforeseen circumstances. Student Advocacy can also be a resource of support for you. Please be on the lookout for that email from advocacy@osu.edu.
My belongings were damaged. What should I do?
Students seeking reimbursement for damages to their personal property related to the Taylor Tower flooding should contact their personal insurance carrier, as outlined in Paragraph 19 of the Housing Terms & Conditions. The university has an established process for reviewing requests for reimbursement related to loss or damages in the residence halls and additional questions can be directed to Housing and Residence Education at hre@osu.edu.
Who can I write/call if I have more questions? You can call the university's Taylor Tower hotline number at 614-292-7711 or send an email to SL-taylortowermove@osu.edu.
