The film follows Kat Stratford, a fiercely independent and sarcastic high school senior, and her younger sister Bianca, who is popular and eager to date. Their overprotective father, Walter Stratford, forbids Bianca from dating until Kat does, creating a challenge for new student Cameron James, who falls for Bianca but cannot pursue her due to the dating rule.
