 Learning Community Highlights

  • Early arrival program to build relationships with fellow SUSTAINS members, connect with SUSTAINS staff and participate in a service project.

  • Dinner and dialogue series with professionals working in the sustainability for corporations, nonprofit organizations, and in Central Ohio communities.

  • Annual professional development trip over fall break which includes meeting with sustainability professionals involved in urban sustainable development, renewable energy, federal and/or state agency work, sustainable food systems, nonprofit management, or corporate sustainablility.

  • Involvement in a Roots (2nd year students) and Shoots (1st year students) mentoring program and opportunities for project-based learning work with OSU sustainability staff and faculty.

  • Opportunities to be involved with sustainability initiatives on campus, as well as service opportunities in the community.

Academic Component

  • Develop and implement a sustainability project on-campus with support from Ohio State faculty and staff
  • Seminar course taught in the Fall semester by Sustainability Institute Staff

How to Apply (New Students)

  • Students interested in being a member of the SUSTAINS Learning Community should complete the Learning Community Application by April 20, 2020. No late applications will be accepted. You do not have to wait until you are accepted to Ohio State and/or receive your housing contract to apply. 
  • Housing Contracts are sent to your OSU email account based upon your paid acceptance to the University beginning in March.
  • Please make sure your contract and space reservation fee are received no later than May 29, 2020 in order to ensure your eligibility to participate in a Learning Community. 
  • On your contract, please make sure you select North Campus as your requested area of residence.
  • Please note that all students in Learning Communities are required to reside in a space within the Learning Community and live with other Learning Community participants. Learning Community students may only request roommates accepted into the same LC.

How to Apply (Current Students)

  • Current OSU students who will be be in their second year during the 2020-2021 school year and are interested in joining or returning to the SUSTAINS Learning Community should complete the Learning Community Application no later than January 29, 2020. Completing this application does not guarantee housing in an Ohio State Residence Hall or a specific room type.  You must submit your reselection form by the University Housing deadline in order to participate.  Your housing reselection information will arrive at your OSU e-mail account at a later date. 
  • Please note that all students in Learning Communities are required to reside in a space within the Learning Community and live with other Learning Community participants. Learning Community students may only request roommates accepted into the same LC.
  • Change of campus students should apply through this (the current student) application and must also contact Housing Assignments no later than February 10, 2020 at 614-292-8266 or to ensure they are included in the reselection process and eligible for Learning Community participation.
